How should we handle cover versions.
|
Hello all,
I have a question about best practices regarding cover versions of songs. This came to my attention while I was making an annotation that referenced Belinda Carlisle’s #1 hit, “Heaven is a Place on Earth.” When searching for the song on Genius, I came across a version credited to Ashley Tisdale.
I took the liberty to change the artist to Belinda Carlisle because:
A) Tisdale’s version did not chart in any country
B) I needed the link in a hurry.
I recognize that this was probably not the best way to handle the situation… but what is the correct procedure? I give you an extreme example, “Money (That’s What I Want)”.
Originally recorded in 1960 by Barrett Strong, it also became a major hit for The Kingsmen (1964), The Sonics (1965), and The Flying Lizards (1980). In addition to these four recordings, it was covered by the following major artists: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Doors and Joe Cocker.
This gives us EIGHT different versions of the song that are notable enough

What music do you love that is a guilty pleasure, or seems weird to admit to others?

Hello Rock Genius contributors! I’m starting a forum to create a space for people to discuss the artists they love that don’t fall into the categories they usually listen to. Unpopular opinions are also welcome. To start, I’ll list some things that I listen to that form my pigeon-hole, and then some things that break the mold.
Classic Rock:
-Led Zeppelin (unpopular opinion: I love In Through the Out Door)
-Black Sabbath (unpopular opinion: I like Randy Rhoades' version of Paranoid best)
-Deep Purple (unpopular opinion: I’d actually rather listen to Rainbow)
-Queen (though my possible favorite is Driven By You by Brian May)
-AC/DC (not with a passion; I like Bon Scott better than Brian Johnson)
New Wave of British Heavy Metal:
-Iron Maiden (unpopular opinion: I really like Paul Di'Anno)
-Saxon (unpopular opinion: I’ve literally never heard a Saxon song I disliked)
-Motorhead (unpopular opinion: sort of overrated)
-Girlschool and Rock Goddess (totally underrated, Rock Goddess is as good as Saxon)
